My brother is currently in India on a vacation and we just received a letter for his oath ceremony in July first week. since he is unable to get the flights for a week before (because of the peak season), he is planning to return to US in the second week of july, as scheduled. In these circumstances, can his wife who is currently in US, send a letter to the INS office requesting to defer the appointment for the next availabe date? Is it OK to defer or is it better if my brother cuts short his trip and attends the oath ceremony? In case the INS agrees to defer, does anybody know how soon he can get the next appointment?

I would greatly appreciate your help in answering my above questions..

Thanks in advance

Hi Meera

How quickly your Oath will be rescheduled really depends on your location.

My dad's friend had the same thing happen to him, he was in India when his Oath letter came.

I don't know how he rescheduled it but he did and got his second Oath letter 2-3 months later...

I would personally - strongly- recommand that your brother just cut short the trip and return in time for the scheduled oath ceremony. Even if he has to buy a new ticket or upgrade in case the airline bookings are not available, he should do it. Just my veiws!
