Days out of the USA

I have a question...

I was reading someone's account of their interview (it was from a few years ago)...

The officer asked "How many days have you been out of the USA in the last 5 years?"

Now when we answer, do we count:

a) 5 years from current date, i.e. 1999 to 2004?

OR

b) 5 years from date of application, i.e. 1998 to 2003?

Are they looking to verify what you wrote in the application, or are they asking for an updated number?

Im reasonably sure the officer meant to ask abt the 5 years prior to applying. i would ask the officer to clarify the question, if i were the applicant
