Currently in COB - Family death, need for death certificate?

Hi Everyone,

I posted this on the political asylum forum also because I received my green card through asylum.

I have been in my COB since early October 2009. I came to visit my Mom, who was suffering from a liver disease and passed away recently. I am from one of the "countries of interest." I plan to stay with my family for another 2-3 months--the length of my visit will be less than, but close to, 6 months. Considering all the new immigration procedures for these countries, I expect lots of questioning at POE. I was wondering if I would need my Mom's death certificate? She died at home and I am not even sure they issue death certificates here. Any advice would be highly appreciated.

Best,
Gino

An actual death certificate should not be necessary, but you should definitely get some kind of proof of the death, such as the printed funeral program and/or the newspaper obituary. And your birth certificate (or at least a copy of it) to show that she is your mother, if the funeral program or obituary does not mention your name.

But even without the new terror alerts, you can still expet big problems explaining how and why you spent nearly 6 months in the country that you claimed is persecuting you. Unless you were not the primary applicant when you applied for asylum.

Thanks Jackolantern for your advice. I will take some evidence with me. I got my asylum more than 10 years a go and the things here have changed since then, so I don't anticipate any problems with that.

best,
Gino
