Curious name change question in N-400

GC2C

Registered Users (C)
Hello all,

Very curious about this name change situation.

Currently our legal name in all US records including SSN, DL, GC etc is as below:

Myself: (Male)

First name: A%
Middle name: B C ( two separate words)
Last name: D

For my wife:

First name: X
Middle name: None
Last name: D

In our N-400s, we would like our new names to be as below:

Myself:

First name:A ( remove the last character of %)
Middle name: None
Last name: B

For my wife:

First name: X
Middle name: None
Last name: B

Please advise if the above is possible to do in the application, if we will face any potential issues and/or questions

1. from USCIS during application process

2. during interview

I hope I am able to explain clearly, if anyone need any clarifications, please let me know.

To bring to your attention again, please see that "B" is being moved from being part of middle name to being the last name.

I just did a legal name change with my N400 whereby I dropped my last name, made my previous middle name my last name and added a new middle name. The officer did not ask me why I was changing my name. Good luck.

no questions asked on name change. But what I heard is that your last name cannot sound like some initials......

for e.g. you can't have last name like AB, ABC etc.

Thanks for your responses.

One more question:

In the N-400 application, in "B" : Name as it appears exactly on GC, do we need to mention the name that is mentioned at the top of the GC or the one far below which is in between the so many <<<<< .... >>>>>>s?

Thanks to everyone for their valuable inputs.

To everyone else: please advise if your opinion differs in any of the items above.

Oh well, one more question:

Does birth certificate have any role to play in the name change process?

Yes. If your birth certificate name doesn't match your other existing documents (passport, license, etc.), and you don't already have another legal name change document, they use the birth certificate as the tiebreaker for your current legal name. So if you are doing a name change to a new name, the name change document would show the old name as your birth certificate name, which could make it difficult to change your other documents if they don't match the birth certificate name.

Thanks Jack for your response.

My birth certificate has my name as B A% C D, all the four words without mentioning seperately as to the first, middle and last names.

I guess this should be OK since the BC contains all the 4 words but just in a different order?

Also, would USCIS or the IO ask for the BC during the process or at interview time?

The IO asked for my birth certificate. The last name on my BC is my middle name on GC, passport and marrieage certificate. My N400 name change was to restore my last name. The IO did not ask me for another legal name change document.
Although your A file probably has a copy of BC you should bring the original during the interview. As in all legal proceedings bring all the documents that may be needed but don't volunteer them unless you're ask to.
