Hello Good People

Just found this site seems like a good community!!

Well anyway im irish and have been staying in california for about 2 months i won my GC in the lotto. I havent received it yet or a welcome letter (But thats another story!!). Ive just filed for a i-131 or re-entry permit. but i will be leaving the country before i get a response to it. Ive got them to mail it to the address of a friend in the US where my GC is also going to so as not to confuse them!!!!

Im prob going to walk over the border into mexico and start on my travels from there. I suppose my question is do i have to show the re-entry permit to anyone. Or let the border guards know im leaving the country or anything.

Oh another thing off topic can i get a californian driving licience by just showing them my irish one? Should i do anything else to prove that i have ties here so there is no hassel when im coming back in bout 2 years? I have a bank account but its not a residents bank account have to wait till i get the card for one of those.

Thank you

Hi Goingtraveling!
A N-470 reentry permit is VERY STRONGLY recommended as it is intended to declare your intent of maintaining your residence in the United States for Naturalization purpose and this absence may affect the date you would be eligible to apply for US citizenship..
Link to the N-470 form: http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/us...nnel=db029c7755cb9010VgnVCM10000045f3d6a1RCRD
P.S.: In spite of my userid I am not Irish.

I beleive His Q was regarding 'showing REP at border'?Right?
N 470,though strengthens the 'residency and intention' claim,it's main purpose is to 'preserve ' the time for calculation of 'Continuous residency' for purpose of 'naturalization' application.
Further, for N470, he should have been employed abroad by an 'Qualified'(for 470)employer for that, which is not easy to get an approval at all ,unless he is an govt./govt.agency etc. employee.
Otherwise why and how he should get approval of 470(for preservence??).

Normally If trip is less than 6 months(not frequent 6 months) and unless Border agent asks for proof and intention to maintain GC,is there any need to show REP,let alone 470 ?
