Crime-free Residential Areas in Vancouver BC

We, self, spouse and child, may be moving to vancouver in a month. We plan to rent an apartment or house in a crime-free area. We are currently thinking of Burnaby or Surrey. I have heard Surrey has crime in certain parts while Burnaby might be expensive. Please share your experiences, if any, on this topic. How much should one expect to pay for a 2 bed apt? I don't mind living in any suburb as long as it's on a sky train route. Any info on BC living is appreciated.

Burnaby is good and you can see apts . near metrotown or loughheed mall . see ads on vancouversun.com . average 2 bed is around 900$ - 1100

Could you share some insights to areas around Surrey? Which areas are good and which aren't. What do basement and main floor mean? Can you recommend other areas too? Looking at the ads on vancouversun, I think 900 should fetch a good 2 bed apt. Plus, I may need to be on a month to month arrangement. Is that possible? How long are the typical leases? Thanks for the replies.

Typical leases in canada are about a year (if you rent an apt ) , You may be lucky if you get one for 6 months . Surrey is also a good area but the crime rate is a little high .

Basement suites mean accomadation area in big houses where they have an independant area for you to live in , somthing like a Paying guest acommadation .

Month to month might be possible in surrey base ment suites but not for an apt though

again refer to vancouversun.com for apts and in surrey lolcal shops have advertisments for basement suites

Some more Q's

bhand,
I need to bother you some more. Could you give me info on areas around Surrey that should be avoided. I have heard Whalley and areas close to King George Highway are bad. So, generally speaking, is the South of Surrey better than the North. Also, how about Delta? I am considering the Burnaby areas you suggested. But, just feel the need to be armed with as much info as possible. Thanks a bunch.

Look around Loughheed mall or Brentwood mall or Metrotown in Burnaby . Also Coquitlam . Surrey near Delta /72nd avenue is okie

I am also moving to Vancouver in a month

Hi tarantula,
I am also moving to Vancouver, with my family some time in Jan/Feb from Bay Area. Please share if you find a good place for renting. I recently got landed status in Canada after working for 5 years on H1B in US.
Thanks

Moving sux

I have heard that vancouversun.com classifieds is the primary area to start hunting for apartments. There is also a site called rentbc.com but I have not heard any experiences on this site. As of now, I haven't found anything yet. Since I have a family, we definitely need to physically see the apartment. If you don't mind living in a basement suite, there are lots of them in vancouver. The leases in canada run 6-12 months. Some have month-to-month. Read canadaho.com since you will need all your dmv records, insurance history etc for car insurance in canada. So far, the move is looking like a royal pain. And add the snowstorm to the equation and you are getting a clear path to hell :). Bhand, thanks for all your replies.
