It should not be an essay. Just mention the criteria under which you are applying for naturalization. Its not a mandatory document.

Thanks for your info. I just simply write the documents that I attach with the cover letter and my application general background. I think having a cover letter is easier for the officer to have a general idea what the case he/she is gonna handle even though it is not required to do so.

Just FYI, my cover letter just indicated what was included in the form. I forgot to say under what category I am applying etc.

Was fine - had no impact.

There is no advantage of sending a cover letter....
