Looking at statistics detailing the country of citizenship of people granted asylum in the US, I started wondering what is the basis of some asylum cases. I can see how people from places with dictatorships and opressive regimes are granted asylum in America, but how can people from places such as Australia, Brazil, Chile, etc get asylum visas? I just don't understand how they'd make their cases given the fact they live in stable, democratic countries.
