Could not get SSN card changed to remove work restriction

Hi,

I had been to the SSN office last week to get the work restriction removed ("valid for work with INS authorization only"), but we could not get it done. The clerk there said that we can get that done only after our plastic cards arrive. I told her that I have heard from many people that they got their SSN cards changed only after the passport stamp. But she said that it can't be done any more. Their database gets updated only after a plastic card is generated. Has any one else seen this recently? I don't know if this is true or whether that clerk was not aware of the facts.

Thanks!

when I went with my stamp, the clerk told us that it could take up to 8 weks to get it done, since the system needs to be updated, and then they can verify our resident status. If we had the card, she said we could do it on the spot.

Its been 6 weeks, and still no new SSN card in the mail for me. I suggest you wait until you get the plastic GC and then go update your SSN card as they suggested.

Hi,

I got my PP stamped on 20th Dec. I went to SS office on 27th Dec. The person their checked up their DB for me and my family and said that she could find our records. I got new cards without "Work Authorisation ..." clause on 5th Jan. Though on one card of my daughter they put the "Work Authorization ..." clause again. We visited SS office again on 6th to get that fixed and the person said it is mistake at their end and they will get another one issued. But as per their practise/rules they can issue next SS card after 15 days of previous card so we have to wait for this process. We are waiting for one card to be fixed. All other 3 new correct cards we have already received in less than 2 weeks time.

Either they changed the rules or the person there didn't know the rules.
