Hi all,
i am going to get married to a US citizen overseas, here in my Country Jordan, and she will file me the 1-30 from here too so i can obtain a green card.

And since i used to face a problem every time i applied for non immigrant visa, considering my name (as it is a common name), i am thinking to correct my family name, by adding the real one, rather than using my grandfather name!

since i was 2 years old, there was a mistake in printing my birth certificate, by adding my grandfather name as my Family name! ... and now i am 24 years old, do u think its too late for me to correct it! should i leave it as it is!

or would it do any good, to correct it by adding my real family name!
but i am afraid that when they check my last records and my last visas to the united states, they would find i used to have another family name!

I'll appreciate any help.. thanks again!

You can change your name and when you file for your green card just specify that in the application. They will look at your old visas but tht should not be a problem. It may delay things though.

Changing name is not as easy as you think. Not sure how the laws of your country work, but you have to jump through a lot of hoops to get your work done. Most of the times, they ask for a specific reason for name change. For women its relatively easier as they can choose to change their names after marriage, but for men, it doesnt make sense to change their name without a reason. Also, what reason would you give them as to why you plan to change your name? Faster GC? When you file your application, there would be a section that would ask you to enter all the names you have used in your life. In any case you have to enter the name you are using now.

Lets put it this way. Your name change would have to be done for your passport, drivers license, birth certificate (which i doubt they would change) and all official documents under your name. I hope you know that part of the immigration process is the FBI name check where all possible variants of your name are checked. As it is, you are experiencing big delays in getting a clearance for the visa, and if you happen to change your name, i can only guess more confusion and longer wait for your name check to get cleared. I would suggest you to get the opinion of a lawyer before you do something like this. Name change should not be taken very lightly
