I have been laid off recently. I am looking for some contract work with a company, does anybody know if there is a visa type as contract H1, which would allow me to work on a contract basis , like say on a contract for 3 mo, or 6 mo ...

Not on H1

The H1 based on an LCA has to specify a salary and also a company since the company takes that obligation. You may work with the company on the contract , but not from an immig point of view. (give a reasonable number as salary)
