Dear All,
I filed my 485 in Vermont Jan 2004.
Got my fingerprinting Nov-2004. and havent heard back since then.

One of my friends told me that I may ask my senator to enquire about my case. Has anyone done that before?

Any tips. sample letters?

thanks in advance.

Yes, I contacted both my US Senators and Congressmen. Believe it or not, ALL responded and ALL had their office staff contact the FBI and USCIS on my behalf to get updates on my case. Through them I learned that I was cleared with the FBI name check AND that an RFE was going to be issued, in addition to the deadline the USCIS has established for my case in terms of the final processing of it. I live in a small state where the US Senators and Congressmen are EXTREMELY close to their constituents and with virtually no immigration, so it may not be possible to get their help if living in larger states with lots of immigration like California and Texas. As far as a sample letter, I have none. I just wrote a paragraph about my case in general and frustration over the immigration process, and finally just asked them for their assistance in checking with the FBI and the USCIS for a status update that is more in-depth than what I get through the USCIS case status webpage.

Thanks a lot for the prompt response.

Does all GC applications go thru' NNCP (name check) or its meant for citizenship applicants ?

I am pretty confused.
Also, How do I find out whether I am stuck in NNCP ?

bjorn, how long did it take them to answer? I sent a letter to my senator a week ago and haven't heard anything from them yet :(

Yes, all GC applicants go through FBI namecheck. You can only find out by calling the USCIS and they can tell you if you are cleared or not, that's all. As far as the FBI, I have read that many people have tried to contact the FBI but not succeeded. That's where the Senators and Congressmen help out. They can make one call to the FBI and find out the status and even expedite the clearance. That's how powerful they are.

It took me 3-6 weeks to get responses. 3 weeks for the fastest response and 6 weeks for the slowest. The request I sent through the US Congress website was then forwarded to the local office in my home state, and then a Senator and Congressman office assistant in my home state helped me out.

did you call 1800 national hotline?

I personally never called the USCIS hotline as the US Senators and Congressmen did this for me. They do NOT call the 1800 number, but have "special" numbers they call so they can speak with Congressional staff and management at the USCIS, who in turn can provide much more information than the 1800 hotlime reps. you and I would end up speaking with. But yes, according to several posts on this forum, people have called the national 1800 hotline and found out if they were cleared or not. You apparently get either a "yes" or "no", and that's all the information they have available. That's why senators and congressmen are incredible valuable as they can really dig deeper and push for your case to be cleared and get approved.
