Consulate preference for Consular Interview

By mistake, I opted US Consulate in Mumbai for the consular interview. Someone told me that since I am from Karnataka I should have opted for Chennai Consulate. Does it matter? Anyone out there in the same boat as me? Any bad experiences ??? I haven't sent packet 3 yet. Will it be a problem to change it now?

you will probably have to get in touch with the NVC and tell them to change your consulate. I dont know how far down the road you are, but the NVC will most likely create a new MDR case number for you (i'm guessing you have BMBxxx ) and you can go from there.

If the NVC has just got your file or have just issued you a BMB #, it shouldn't delay your case for more than a couple of weeks. If you have already waited for like 4 weeks and got your P3, then that time may have been wasted if the NVC wants to issue you a new P3 based on the new case #..

In any case, talk to the NVC and see what they say.. They may even be able to accept your P3 based on old number and send it to Chennai as your new case #.

Good luck and let us know what happens.

Thanks Moulin Rouge !!!

I just got an email from my HR saying my I-140 was approved and I will get a package that consists of applications for permanent residencs status at the U.S. Consulate in Mumbai, and things like a legal representation letter that needs to be signed. So, I have no idea how far down the road I am. Is the package packet 3? My attorney has been very un-cooperative and hence I do not know whether a case number has been assigned yet.

How do I get in touch with the NVC. And again, does it really matter which consulate I go to?

you aint too far down the line.. I'd suggest you call the NVC @ 603 334 0700 and first use the AVM to see if your 140 has reached them (EACxxx translates to 322xxx).. If it hasn't, the AVM will tell you 'no case.. and if it has, the AVM will say 'transferring to operator.."

Once you know that the case is received, talk to the operator and ask them if a case # has been assigned. If your case # begins with MDR, its assigned to Chennai and you are all set. If its BMB, its mumbai and you can tell them that you dont qualify under Mumbai's jurisdiction and need to go to Chennai.

Thanks again for your response.... Moulin

I don't have the EAC number as it is our firm policy not to share it with us.......some bull crap. So, I guess I am stuck for a while. Meanwhile, my friend had a similar situation wherein she wanted Mumbai but because of attorney's mistake was sent to Delhi, luckily for her it went fine. But this was last year and I just wanted to make sure that the rules haven't changed. If they haven't, I guess I should be fine. Have you seen any document saying that you should apply only in your jurisdiction?
