confused - when to add wife's name after I-140 approval?

Hello all,

I was not married at the time of filing my I-140. I just received my NVC bill. It is only for myself. I am married now. Clearly, NVC has no knowledge of my marital status, and they dont have my wife's application either.

I would like to ask the gurus, at what stage should I add my wife's name, and how do I pay her fees to the NVC?

My attorney has given me two options:

1. provide a marriage certificate, wife's birth certificate to NVC and ask them to issue another bill for wife. This may take
additional 1-2 months.

2. add wife's name at the consulate, after our case is forwarded to the consulate.

Can the gurus suggest me what would be the safe way to go, so that I face no hassles regarding my wife's application? Of course if option 2 (adding her name at the consulate) is safe, I would go that route. Can I get some advise please?

THanks a lot.

Option 2 will have the hassle of paying the consular fees at the consulate as opposed to nvc.

I went with 1.

Sorry did not write completely yest.

Option 2 was not given to me. If your lawyer is a lazy ___ or uncooperative, option 2 might be better, cause at least your case will start moving forward.

In my case, the lawyer took 5-6 monthts to execute option 1.

thanks alren

Alren, thanks for the reply.
So as I understand it, you too added your wife's name to your case at NVC AFTER your I-140 was approved, and lost 5-6 months in the process.

Can anyone else, who added their spouse straight at the consulate (rather than apply to the NVC to add the spouse) please reply? Are their any hassles of adding wife at the Consulate, rather than at NVC? My lawyer is not very sure of the option of adding wife at the Consulate. Hence my confusion.

Any inputs from the experienced would help me a lot!

Thanks

You will not find a lot of cases on this web site where folks have added their wife's at the consulate bcoz that generally happens if you have recently gotten married or you are about to get married around the cp interview date, which are a handful cases.

Bottom line is add your spouse to your case asap. Either ways whether you do at NVC or @ consulate it will take equally longer. It is your choice! Alren has made a good point!
