Confused by 6 month extension sticker?

In September I applied for a greencard renewal as my 10 year GC was due to expire 6 months later. I went for my biometrics app. In which they put an extension sticker on my soon-to-be expired GC, they said the sticker would be good until July, 2014. This is where I'm confused; I intend to go on an 8 week vacation to visit my family (in England) for the Christmas holidays - I intend to return around the middle of February - however, if I haven't yet received my new Greencard am I still able to leave the country & return in February if the sticker expires in July? I thought you needed at least 6 months on your greencard to travel outsider the States? I have scored through the rubbish INS site to no avail. I'm sure I'll receive my GC before December, but I just want to be on the safe side! I'd really appreciate any help at all!

There is no such requirement under US law.

However, other countries where you are not a citizen might require that you have 6 months remaining on the green card, visa, reentry permit, or whatever other document you're going to use to return to the US, because they don't want you to be in a situation where you're stuck in their country as a result of the expiration of your travel document(s).
