please I have a peculiar problem. I am co SHS graduate. since completion I have been teaching as a pupils teacher in a primary school using my SHS certificate. In filling form DS-230 I don't know what to write as my present occupation because if I write teaching as my occupation I need to support it with a certificate( university degree/ teacher training certificate or diploma ) that qualifies me as a teacher which I don't have . somebody I consulted told me to write student in the present occupation column instead of teaching since I am applying with my SHS certificate .please any ideas ,help and advice ? thank you I'm advance !

Dear, why don't you apply on the basis of your 12th grade education? I am sure you have 12th grade education, so there is no need for your occupation if you have the 12th grade education. Most of us apply on the basis of 12th grade education, although we also have degrees as well as jobs. Going through the route of education is very easy as compared to the route of occupation.

By the way, I am assuming that SSH is equivalent or higher than a 12th grade education. If it isn't, then it is a different case all together. So, wait for replies from other forum-mates. Best of luck!!![/

thank you gabam for your quick reply.Yes I am applying on the basis of my Senior High School which is equivalent to the 12th grade education. So is it ok to maintain 'student' in the present occupation column since I am applying with my 12th grade education.

No, why do you want to mention student there. Are you really a student somewhere? If yes, then it is ok. If no, then you should mention that you are teacher. See, it is not the DS-230 which asks you which route you would want to follow. It is actually the second form, DSP-122, which gives you the option which route you would like to take. In DSP-122 you should list all you education record. I personally suggest that you should take the education route, it is very hassle-free, all of us have taken the education route. Best of luck!!!

yes I am taking the education route so on form DSP-122 I provided my education record and answered NO where it asked if one is applying base on work experience. Gabam my worry is I am not a student currently and I am also afraid that if I write teaching as my occupation I wouldn't be able to provide evidence. I am from Ghana, West Africa where any senior high school graduate who wishes to teach can apply to teach in private school even sometimes in public primary school but you not recognized as a professional teacher since you don't have the qualification. we engage in such jobs to earn a living. Gabam to make things simple assuming that I just completed 12th grade education (not employed) and won the lottery what should I write in the current occupation section on form DS-230? Thank you for having the time for me and you contribution so far.

Just tell them the truth. Tell them where you work. Write teacher in that question, and tell them the details of what you teach and where you teach. Don't worry about your qualifications! There are so many types of teaching. People teach in tuition center, people teach in academies. I know several friends who teach mathematics to school students, and they are not degree holders. They just have 1 10th grade education. But ofcourse, they are not permenanent teachers, they just teach part-time. So, tell them the truth, don't hide anything!!!!
