Co-sponsorship and Bankruptcy

Hi
Thanks for having this forum and pardon me if this is not correct section for this question.
I am running into a situation and will really appreciate any guidance.
I co-sponsored one girl about 3 years back who was coming after marriage to a US citizen. That male is US citizen but still doing MD (Student in College).
After few months both got trouble and both filed for divorce with several other allegations on each other. Girl had physical assault and other criminal charges against boy. She lost that case but divorce and immigration is still under process.
Now the Girl's Lawyer called me and asked to pay all the lawyer fees and support for that girl(125% of poverty line). Girl is now living with her aunt. The lawyer threatened to sue me because the main parties are unable to pay .
I have also filed Bankruptcy recently which has been approved.
Can I still be liable even after Bankruptcy or what other bad situations I can run into?
I will really appreciate your help.

I assume you completed a I864 affadavit of support. That is a contract between the sponsor and the US government - so I think the lawyer is trying his luck to see if you can be scared into paying something. It also sounds suspiciously personally motivated and I would question where this is coming from.

I'm not a bankruptcy expert but I am guessing that would afford you some protection BUT AGAIN if the lawyer is not the US government you have no contract with him....

Thanks for prompt response. The lawyer is not US Government Lawyer and even he has not sent me something in writing. He simply calls me to pressurize other party to come up with a deal. I am not in a position to pressurize any side.

Yep - it sounds silly to be honest. Tell the lawyer to put it in writing (put up or shut up).

The contract is indeed enforceable against the sponsor by the sponsored immigrant. There has been several cases of this. See

I agree with that - I read the lawyers fees bit and took it that the lawyer is trying to gain some benefit for his/her fees of the I864 - but yes re-reading it I can see that it would be a claim by the girl herself - and agree that would be enforceable (as the contract is a three way agreement).

That is the problem. Girl lost almost all of the cases against her husband and she cannot find a way to get some money from her ex husband because he is not making enough. I also wonder that how a private lawyer will be representing here without taking any money?
Now the Lawyer and that girl both look desperate to me and trying to get whatever they can from any party. Is there any way this I864 can be withdrawn ???

Your case is clearly unusual, and it is unlikely anyone here has the appropriate experience about this NOR should you even listen. You need to speak to a lawyer, not "people on the internet". That will probably cost you money, but better that than paying for a LONG time to come. Get a lawyer.
