...Also disturbed by the perturbation in their political universe and liberal orthodoxy, Newsweek columnists Fareed Zakaria and Jonathan Alter attacked my positions on illegal immigration (I'm against it) and border security (I'm for it).

Zakaria refers to "CNN's Lou Dobbs and his angry band of xenophobes" and Jonathan Alter describes those who agree with me as "nativist Lou Dobbsians." But Alter and Zakaria are far too bright to not know better. I've never once called for a restriction on legal immigration -- in fact, I've called for an increase, if it can be demonstrated that as a matter of public policy the nation requires more than the one million people we bring into this country legally each year....

Bill O'reily feeds irrational conservatives and this guy feeds people who are opposed to immigration of all sorts forgetting thats the one reason why they are here in first place. Both rely on twisted facts and figures. Yes, I have also watched those episodes of Mr. Dobbs where he spews about how immigrants in any ways are damaging the face of america inside and out.

Strange but thats how minds are shaped with the media if thats what you get to hear and thats what you want to hear or vice versa.

where_is_my_gc,

Most of these TV and Radio show hosts care more about ratings than anything else. Depending on the political climate and mood of the country they latch onto whatever they feel will get them most attention. It is hard to tell where they really stand. Besides, as Braindrain said, who cares about what Lou Dobbs has to say.

just another guy

he is just another guy trying to make a quick buck. he can't even say he supports legal immigration in one sentence with out clauses like " if it can be demonstrated that as a matter of public policy the nation requires more than the one million people ...blah blah..".

I watched this guy for a week or two...

Lou Dobbs is sick.......He always cries on TV.....that Middle Class is suffering...that American Kids are dumb, their education needs to be improved...that lawmakers are endorsing illegal immigration...outrage at federal govt bodies banning work to illegal immigrants...etc..

after a week or two of his dosage...I just realized he keeps crying to TV over one or other thing all the time...

The worst thing is - when the reporter finishes reporting the entire story....he puts in a concluding statment by mumbling some junk words...which don't even finish into a sentence! He needs to improve his conclusion speeches - desperately! That's just dumb!

He is just an old dumb guy - he shoud add some positive outlook to his news segment...it's too negative...all the time!

I do not agree with what he says

At one point he was bashing h1 visa holders. He is not pro-immigration. He is against it.

He only talks about immigration whether there is a tsunami or earthquake or Housing industry bust.

He might influence the congress through media I am not sure...but he was calling for border fence every day in his show...and finally bush approved for one. His shows might have influenced the action I am not sure.

Anyway for legal immigration I don't think he can do anything +ve or -ve.

He always speaks from the perspective of Middle Class - all his opinions revolve around favoring middle class...

I would suggest that US deport Lou Dobbs as the first step to the immigration reform :) maybe he can report from Iraq or Afghanistan

did you guys learn to read between lines

"in fact, I've called for an increase, if it can be demonstrated that as a matter of public policy the nation requires more than the one million people we bring into this country legally each year...."

he will safely ignore any report or any evidence which suggest there is a demand for high skill workers.

he is targeting one set of audience and just say what they want hear

mr. dobbs is weird in many ways. he hate sth elottery system. he hates the guest workers programs. and a new guest worker program would mean that peopel would come legally, but he hates that too. georgetwon u did a survey and found that the senate bil will give us like close to 2 million new IT workers by a certain dfate. but we wil lonly need like 500k new IT workers.

so mr. dobbs blasted the senate bill. but did he said, "let's make sure we get a bill that gives us enough, but not that many." perhaps 200k would be enough and the other 300k would be natives." no. the entire bill sucks. and one things is to bash people for supporting amnesty, but he also bashes them for legal migration.

Two sides of the story

Good morning,

Fact: IEEE registered decrease in salary for engineers in 1.8% in the last few years. When that happens, honestly, it is really seems that there is a certain supply of people in the market. The IT boom times are long gone. Don't you think that people are pumping that information to Lou Dobbs? Of course they are.

Fact: Guest-worker programs do not work. Just to prove that point, why the current illegal immigrants are no treated as guest-workers and asked to leave, as if that was the end of a temporary guest-work assignment?
Once people argue that they have established roots, they want to stay.

Solution: If it is proven that the US needs unskilled workers, in addition to the 1+ million current legal immigrants that are currently coming to the US, why not just increase the existing family base greencard category in let's say, 100-200K/year, hire more USCIS staff. Bring people that fit a certain profile and make them eligible for EAD right away tailored to specific sectors such agriculture, etc. Then few years down the road the permanent residency is processed and it is OK. The idea of bringing people based on the family base category is not necessarily ideal, but at least is better than the lottery one, since it could allow people to come based on specific profile. As is, I think the lottery system is unfair because it brings people not based on any merit.

While we continue to debate always looking only to our advantage and not considering the impact on people who live here, I am afraid that we will just create more resistance toward our cause. That has been my position for years. Some people at a certain organization really couldn't handle that, but that is the truth. We need to be careful with our unilateral position, because we are buying lots of enemy that way. Just my thought.

Regards,

Marlon

I have not seen Lou Dobb's show recently.......but dont you agree with him that Immigration system in this country has become a joke??.........that politicians use it as a ATM card for the vote bank ????.....

if there is negativity all around....how are you going to get positive things??

business wants cheap labor, period....they dont care about nation....or their fellow beings....they want more money......capitalism at its finest...

politicians want business funding to run for office.....and they also need vote....so they keep doing things to get these two...

everyday thousands of illegals cross into this country.....with no education.....what do you think are the chances that these people will like to get into business of crime??

how about you show us some positives??

one more thing.....do you know that it does not matter how much H1B visa quota is increased.....or how much EB based GCs are issued.............after 10 years.........everything that can be outsourced to a cheaper country will be done........business only cares about profit......

after 10 years.....there will not be any need for H1B visas or GCs.....there will not not much skilled jobs left over here.......but there will always be a need for unskilled cheap labor unless they stop farm subsidies to american farmers....
