Can a greencard holder claim unemployment benefits and if so, for how long?
Is there a time limit after which the benefits stops ?
What about citizens?

This should not be a problem for the purpose of applying for citizenship later. It is something you are entitled to.

However, if you become a public burden (in which case unemployment insurance is NOT), you may have problem getting the citizenship in future.

Of course, citizens can always claim whatever they are allowed to as they have become the 1st-class people in this country.

You may claim unemployment for six months, then in the case of California, if you participate in the California Training Benefits (CTB) program, you may claim up to another six months.

I read that the public charge is not a test (disqualification
factor) in determineing citizenship eligibility. So my understanding
is that a person who is likely to become a public charge can get
citizenship if all other cetrrria are met. On the other hand,
a PR can be deported for being a public charge.

So I see the dillemma here for the INS. One one hand,
the PR is perfectly eligible for cittizneship. On the other hand, the
PR is deportable. I believe the INS can technically
initialte two simutaneous motions--one is to naturalize the
PR and the other is to deport the PR. What the PR end up
depend on race between two motions.

need advice from the people who have done it or understand these circumstances

I'm on the same boat too. After a month since my GC was approved (thru CP process), my company is being bought out. Since, the deal is only asset-acquisition type of deal, the current company is terminating every one. My questions:

1. Is it safe for me to collect unemployment insurance benefits now considering I just got my GC (The plastic card was received last week)? Or Should I wait a little bit longer to file my claim(say in Nov or Dec)?

2. If I file my claim, will INS revoke my GC status?

3. I need to travel overseas for less than a month in Nov' 02, can the INS officers at the POE deny my entry to the US (assuming that they know that I'm not working for my employer and/or collecting unemployment insurance benefits)?

Please advice.

Thanks.
