Hi
I am applying my citizenship on June 2007.I got my green card thru employment at the age of 26,before that i was on H1B.I just want to know do i need to register the Selective service, as because i got at my GC at the age of 26. I was on valid nonimmigrant(h1b) status before my green card. UCIS website saying if you are in states between the age 18 to 26 other than nonimmigrant status you need to register the selective service. But in my case i got my GC exactly at the age of 26,the status of mine changed from nonimmigrant to the immigrant status at the age of 26. So i am just wondering do I need to register Selective service or not? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Thanks
Sri

You need to register (Permenant Resident or not) if you are 18 through 26. If you are 26 now, you need to register...

Thanks for the response.I guess i didn't mention my age in my preivous mail.I am 31 now.But i got my GC at the age of 26. So do i need to still register selective service?.

Sss

I am in the same case as you. got GC 3 years ago when I was 26. I was told I didn't have to register. I contacted SS and they asked me to provide them with the proof that I was legally here in USA before the age of 26, which I did and they sent me an exemption letter. you should definately contact SS and get that letter. Make sure you are NICE to them and explain you situation, you'll get it in no time.

Ahhh ok if you where 26 when you got your GC then, then yes, you'll need to contact them to get the exemption letter then. I'm sure that will be asked about in the interview...

Could you tell me what documents did you submitted to SS to get the excemption letter?.

Yup, you'll definitely be needing a status letter. Probably the best thing you could do is call them and discuss what you need to send. Most likely copies of passports, visas and your I-485 approval notice etc.
