I have my citizenship interview at El monte on Aug 26. I am getting prepared with the documents and also for the exam. I have a couple of questions:

1) I am applying on the basis of 4 year + 1 day rule. I got my GC in Aug 1996. But i was out of US for 2 year until 1998 using a Re-Entry permit. In 1998, i gain took a Re-Entry permit and was back to US in oct 2000. Since then I have lived in US. So, I have used the 4 year + 1 day rule when applying for citizenship.
ps: I was out of US as I was attending University in India.

Can anyone who has gone through this 4 year + 1 day rule provide me some tips for the interview - What documents to take etc?

Unfortunatley, I didn't file taxes for the period I was out of US as I never earned any income , and wasn't aware that I need I file tax returns even if I don't earn.

2) What study materials to use for the Citizenship exam. Is it enough to go through the 100 questions on the USCIS website?

Here is my timeline:
DOA : El Monte,CA
PD: 03/11/05
FP : 07/09/05
Inteview : 08/26/05

Thanks

Hi

I do not think you will have any problem in the TAX issue - because I know quite a few people NEVER filed taxes, or didnt file taxes the year they didnt work (IRS site says its not necessary to file taxes for those years u didnt work at all). Still if u are worried , u can file your taxes for past 3 years.

Please do post how your interview went - it will be extremely useful info !

Thank u !
Sohal.

Take yoour all passports covering the period from 1996 till present.
They will like to look for if you were continuosly in US after 2000 or not. They will see if you stayed away form US for more than 6 mos after 2000.
Take other proofs to show that you were physically present from 2000 till present. Your credit card records, banks statements, car ownership recors, apt rentals, bills job records, paystubs, tax papers may also help.
You are OK, I do not think you have anything to worry about.
