citizenship for a new born

I am an expectant mother.

After my delivery in July, my family (including me and the new born) would be returning to India in August as per my husband's project requirements. My husband is on an L1 visa.

I would like to know the process to obtain passport / citizenship and the time taken for the same for a new born baby. I am told that the birth certificate and the ssn no. for the new born is processed through the hospital where the delivery takes place. Once I have these two documents, can I apply for the citizenship for my newborn from outside USA if I fail to obtain the same before I leave USA.

Please help me out with my predicament.

you have to obtain a passport for the child, otherwise the child cannot travel.
Birth certificate takes only 1-2 weeks after the child is born. You can then get the passport expedited in 1 week. there is an extra fee for faster passport.
