Citizenship background check types

To whom who may know the answer,

I wanted to know what type of background check USCIS does on Citizenship applicants (other than FBI fingerprint and FBI name check). Somebody told me that USCIS also does "internal fingerprint check" and they run fingerprints through US-VISIT visitor enrollment database, but I was under impression that US-VISIT was only applicable to visitors and had nothing to do with citizenship applicants.

If they indeed run check through US-VISIT, do they also check fingerprints taken at US consulates for when a person may have applied for a non-immigrant visa a few years back?!

I was under impression that citizenship background check only encompassed FBI and criminal/offender files with other agencies, including USCIS.
