Hi all, how are you doing guys.

i was in united states as an asylum seeker and now i am permanent resident? do my presence as an asylee count to my citizen application requirement of 5 years presence in USA.

I am also a bit disturbed my father is old 90 years, every time i call he just want to see me before he dies it is really tough? if i can sneak back to where i came from and see my father before he dies would that affect my citizenship application requirement?

Please brief me asap

Presence as asylee does not count towards citizenship. You have to go by the Residence Since Date on your Green Card.

In my opinion going back home to visit ailing parent wont affect your citizenship. Just get a doctor note about his condition etc. The most that can happen is that I/O may not approve you right away. But a few here in this forum have visited COP and are now US Citizens.

Of course presence as an asylee counts. They backdate your greencard a year so that time counts if you apply as soon as you're eligible. Now you do lose some time due to processing (My asylum approval date was in Late May of 2008 but my resident since date is in Late August of 2008 since that's when my GC was approved) but it's only months. Mine would have been earlier if I applied sooner but I couldn't apply for a month after I was able to and then it took 2 months to process and that is reflected in my backdated GC.
