hi,

i'm rather confused about what is expected for the OCI card as friends who have applied to other consulates seem to have followed different rules than what is posted on the DC consulate website.

1) Fill out Part A online;
2) print out 2 copies of forms A and B for each person
3) photos: 5 total per person (2 pasted on A plus 1 to be attached)
4) documents:
a. notarized US passport first & last 2 pages (2 copies pp)
b. original Indian passport (mine & my husband's)
c. self attested copy first & last 2 pages of Indian passport (2 copies pp)
d. notarized copy of naturalization certificate (mine & my husband's) 2 copies pp i am unclear on the purpose of this
e. daughter's birth cert (born in the US) copies (2) notarized
5) fees: $295 pp cashiers check ( what about the 175 pp to cancel our Indian passports?)

i am also unclear about when to send the US passports.. i would prefer to go to the consulate myself to do this as i live near DC but not sure if the policy on the website is current.

thanks for any help.

Sorry I am not familiar with consulate specific rules, but ...
#1. Rules are different from consulate to consulate, so go by what your consulate website says
#2. In general, they do not want you coming to the consulate for OCI
#3. Pay up the 175 for canceling passport before you send OCI ... get the surrender certificate first then file for OCI. That seems to be the wisdom emerging from last couple weeks of drama.
#4. Dont try to understand the purpose of various documents being asked ... recently they are adding quite a few documents which will prove your India citizenship ... but rather than "one of the list", they are going for "all of the list". So asking for your naturalization certificate is not surprising as it has your former country (as I recall).

Check other people's experiences in the DC thread, but it is unlikely someone would have completed processing end to end after they changed the rules.

thank you for your reply.

i am unable to find information on what i am supposed to do to get our INdian passports cancelled. i will check the DC thread, but any idea how long this process takes?

also, is it possible to cancel the passports while in india? (this is of course assuming i get the OCI card and am able to travel later this year).

ETA: YIKES, i just read the last few posts of the DC thread, looks like we'll cancel them first & keep our fingers crossed

1) $20 return postage per applicant? or $20 for the whole family?
2) I was planning on sending the notarized renunciation form & the additional $175 along with the OCI appl.
3) OCI timeline got screwed up due to the rule change. But, if you send the $$ for all the services, I'm sure they will be "glad" to take care of business.
chola
