Changing status from H1b to F1

Hello,
My H1b is expiring in Dec 2004 and I will be registering as fulltime student for the fall 2004 and change.my status from H1 to F1 I would appreicate if someone can let me know how soon I have to file for the change of status and whether I also have to change my wife's H4 status?

Dependent visa for F-1 student is F-2(similar to dependent visa of H-1B worker is H-4).

Are you switching to F-1 after completing your 6-year H-1B visa term ?! Just curious!
