Changing job after filing N-400

Hi,

Given how long it takes for naturalization to be completed, it is likely that a person might have to change employment after N-400 is filed, either willingly or not (laid off).

I keep reading in these forums that during the interview, the officer will ask you if you are still working for that same employer. What is the significance of that question? What if the answer is "no"?

Thanks for your answer.

Best regards.

Your employment status should have little to no bearing on the outcome of your naturalization interview.

IOs make ask the question to determine if the form is filled out correctly, completely, and is consistent with responses on the rest of the form. As others have pointed out, there is no such thing as an "innocent" question from an IO. They may ask about employment status to assess whether you are unemployed for "valid" reasons (laid off, by choice, never was employed, etc.) as opposed to being fired for committing a crime that goes against "good moral character".

But in general, your employment status should not affect the outcome of your naturalization interview.
