Changing from L2- H4

Hello Gurus,
I was working for an Indian company on L1 visa but recently (1 week back) I have joined another company on H1B visa. The H1B visa was approved in March but I started working as an employee of the company only a week back. My wife was with me on L2 visa and her H4 has not been applied yet. Now what is her status? Do I need to apply for her H4 visa? The HR people at my present employer told me that they would apply for my wife's H4 once I get couple of pay stubs. I am really concerned about my wife's status till then. I would be really grateful if anybody could help me on this.

Your wife's H4 status ended the day your change of status to L1 was approved. You should have also applied for her change of status to H4 at the same time. However it is hopefully not too late and you should apply ASAP.
