changing from h1 to h4 while 485 is pending

hi guys,
had a couple of questions. could someone help me out here?

1) Is it possible to apply for change from h1 to h4 while 485 is pending?
   in this case both me and my husband are on h1. he has applied for i485.
   I am planning to join his application as a dependant.we are planning to go to india soon for a vacation before i get my advance parole. can I get an h4 stamp at a consulate in india even if the 485 is pending?

2) is it ok to travel outside the us before we get the i485 receipt?

Yes you can do that.
When I applied for 485 in Nov 2000, both myself and my wife was on H1. We went to India in March 2001, my wife changed her status to H4. There was no problem in doing that.
 
do I need AP?

Thanks a ton for responding. But, did you get AP before travelling or INS receipt was sufficient?

I was the primary applicant when we applied in Nov 2000. We received our EAD and AP in Jan 2001. In March 2001 we travelled to India, but since we never used our EAD or AP, we could travel on our valid H1. Since I applied and recieved H1 extension in 2000 we had to go to consulate for stamping.
I applied for H1 stamping while my wife changed her status and applied for H4 based on my H1.
