Ive submitted a NIW in the category of
academic research wo/ sponsor

What about if I take a job in a completely different field at a company? Do I have any disadvantage to get an H1 Visa or to reapply for a green card in a different category?
do I have to cancel my previous
application or send a letter to the appropriate
department that I am no longer in academic
research?

No

No, there's no need, you can file new I-140 on top of the old one.
