Change TN Occupation category?

I have been working for the past three years as a Management Consultant. I was rejected the first time, because of an unclear job offer letter. Since then, I have been approved 4 times, for four different contracts. I had a problem two months ago, when RENEWING a contract with the same company for the first time. The immigration official at Pearson did not believe I was a consultant, he shouted at me, treated me terribly, and even went on the website of my employer to see that my job title was different (Management Associate). I have a B.A. in History and Philosophy and a Masters in Fine Arts but I have been working with arts organizations for the past six years (for whom I have been doing the consulting) including during my degree. After this latest rejection, I was advised by a lawyer to apply through the Vermont Service Center and paid $1000 for premium processing. I received my acceptance in one week.

I have now been offered a research position from a major university, through a contact I made in my consulting work. I would be working doing research on prospects for fundraising, and doing database analysis, and writing. I would also work with faculty on crafting proposals, which will require understanding their research on science and the humanities. My undergraduate thesis was on the 'History and Philosophy of Science', so I have genuine qualifications in the field.

Do you think it would be a problem to change TN categories to Research Assistant (in a post-secondary educational institution), as I would no longer be consulting? I have looked everywhere, including the TN Immigration Officer handbook, and no where does it say specifically what kind of research one needs to be doing, beyond that it has to be at a post-secondary educational instiution, which this would be. Also, could the immigration official accuse me of lying about my previous job occupation, since I know (from experience) that Management Consultants are given particular scrutiny?

Any advice from someone who has changed TN occupation categories would be appreciated.
