Change of status from TN to F2

Hello,

I would like to quit my current job because of personal reasons and change to F2 (my spouse is a graduate student with F1 visa). I am wondering if I can apply for change of status when I am still working or would it be better to quit the job and go to the border and change to F2? I assume there is no grace period. I am hoping to change the status within a couple of days.

Thanks so much!
PS: My TN is valid till Dec 2021

You can apply for Change of Status while working (a pending application doesn't affect your status; only the approval would change your status), or within the 60-day grace period after quitting, but Change of Status costs $455, whereas leaving the US and re-entering is (I'm assuming you're a Canadian citizen so you don't need a visa) free.

Thanks so much for your response, newacct! I just learnt about the 60 days grace period. I am a Canadian and I live 3 hrs away to the closest border in NY state. I think leaving the US and re-entering will be easier for me.
