I am on OPT and working for small company. My OPT is ending in Jan 2011 and My employer is still not sure whether he will sponsor an H1-B or apply for 17 months extension. My question is I am married and I want my wife to bring in US and want her to study. Just to be on safe side I am planning to apply for an F2 visa. Once she comes here i gets I20 from any university, I will apply for change of status from F2 to F1.
Is it a good choice? Previously I had planned to apply for F1 directly but thought that that might be risky. S it would be better to get F2 first and then apply for change of status.
Please give me any thoughts on this decision. One more thing is I wanted to know about requirements for status change. As per my knowledge one should send original I20, I94, Passport and filled form I539. I am not sure about funding requirements. How much would be needed to show for status change from F2 to F1? Suppose I20 shows total tuition fees $24000 + living expenses. How much I liquid I should have while applying for status change. What evidences for fund need to to be sent with an application?
I would also appreciate very much if somebody can sent me application check list for status change from F2 to F1.
