Change from I-485--> CP: Do I need I-824 to be approved b4 sending docs to consulate?

I have been reading this forum and following discussions where people wish to change from I-485 to Consular Processing (or vice versa).

My lawyer had chosen I-485 route when my I-140 application was filed. I now wish to proceed the consular processing route. My understanding is that I need to file I-824 indicating a change in the process.

My question is do I have to wait for I-824 to be approved before starting the CP process, or is just the receipt of I-824 enough?

Any experiences/comments would be very helpful.
