Caught between USCIS and Employer

I am with a desi contracting firm. Then there is a mid client and then there is this end client whose premises I am working at. I am on OPT which expires on Aug 4, 08. My problem is my H1 case is "received and pending" and that makes me eligible to work and stay beyond Aug 4. BUT If my H1 stays "received and pending" even after Aug 4 and if (may God forbid this) my H1 gets denied then I won't be able to apply for OPT extension. So I was thinking of applying for OPT extension before Aug 4. But since it requires E verify # and my contracting firm will most probably not register for it because then they will have to verify employment eligibility of all new hires ( which they don't want to do because they hire freshers and show 5 yrs experience) I am caught here !! What should I do ???

Has everyone who applied to Vermont got their H1 case approved by now ??
