The Texas Service Center (TSC) announced in a recent meeting with the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) that there is a large backlog in the mail-room which will affect I-485 petitions and all petitions filed concurrently with them (such as I-765 - work authorization, and I-131 - advance parole). These cases received at the INS since September 8, 1999 remain unopened. The TSC says that this temporary backlog is due to inadequate resources and other priorities. They have said that they are working hard to alleviate the backlog.
As a result of this backlog, however, since these cases remain unopened in the mail-room, Receipt Notices have not yet been generated for them, and accompanying petitions (e.g. I-765 and I-131) cannot be adjudicated until they are opened, which may result in longer than expected processing times.
Hopefully, the TSC will be able to re-prioritize and reallocate resources in order to ease this backlog
