Can't Find Anyone to Sign Affidavit Of Support

Hi,
My friend back in my country won a green card he has his entire paperwork ready, except he doesn’t have anyone who can sign up as his sponsor, so he won't become a public charge. I would gladly help him, but I'm myself on a H4 visa here, so as you probably all know need a sponsor myself for work. Anywho, is there other way he can prove, that he won't become a public charge? His father is a wealthy man, so he can support him, but from his country. I really don't know anything about filing for DV lottery, but he called me two days ago, that his interview in a month and he doesn't have anyone in US to support him.
Any advices would be appreciated
And thanks for this website to administrators :p

Dear Sitora,

Maybe, since you are in the US you can help him by finding someone who can write a letter as an offer of employment. The guidelines are:

1. Bank statement with enough funds to be able to support himself while looking for work.
2. Affidavit of Support
3. Offer of Employment
4. Any combination of the above.

Plus at the interview he needs to show confidence in his ability to look for work based on his qualifications or otherwise.

One more thing: the Affidavit (Form I-134 is actually NOT legally binding, although they don't tell you, and it's valid for three years), so with that in mind you may be able to find a willing candidate who can sign it.

Good luck to your friend

Thank you very much Barbara for your quick response.
Your information was very helpful and now I know that he has more options in this case. I just have one more question: how big of a responsibility it is to sign an Affidavit of support? I talked with couple of people and they wouldn't do it for the person they don't know really well. I will read more about it today, but I thought you might have the answer to this question if you have experience with that issue.
Thank you again Barbara for your help

Sitora,

Like I wrote in my previous post the I-134 is NOT legally binding. What it means is that for a period of three years, and in theory, the sponsor promises to support the person they are sponsoring, should this person need it, like for instance if they lost their job etc.
In fact nothing needs to be done. Providing the person will not go on Welfare and will not demand support if needed, then everything will not involve the law. If your friend did one of those things and the law became involved, then the Sponsor is still free from any legal obligation BUT it would be a hassle.

Bottom-line: it is an agreement between two people that has to be clear.
You can read more about it online, I haven't saved the links unfortunately.

My husband had a friend who is also a lawyer sign the Affidavit, he knew there was no risk to him. However, I am NOT a lawyer so please do your OWN reasearch as well.

Thanks Barbara, it makes a lot more sense to me now. I appreciate your help and I will do more research on my own, so hopefully I can help my friend out
Thanks again
