Cancelling my GC application jeopardizes my J-1 status?

It has been a very painful week...

I just got married to a US citizen and applied for my GC. However, after filing the application, I traveled to Mexico for a conference without knowing that leaving the country while the adjustment of status application is pending will abandon my green card application. I had no problem when I re-entered the US with my J-1 visa (without HRR, but I'm getting advisory opinion just in case).

My husband and I emailed to an attoney (we can't afford an attorney, but he is someone we know and is kind enough to give us quick email correspondences), and he recommended to start it over. So we decided to do so, but we have a question for J-1 gurus.

Did I jeopardize my J-1 visa status anyway? I was admitted as a J-1 visa holder at the immigration (and supposedly abandoned my GC application). Can I stay here and work using my J-1 visa legally while we start over a new GC application?

I'd appreciate any suggestions or comments. Thanks in advance.
