It has been a very painful week...
I wrote about this a few days ago. I just got married to a US citizen and applied for my GC. However, after filing the application, I traveled to Mexico for a conference without knowing that leaving the country while the adjustment of status application is pending will abandon my green card application. I had no problem when I re-entered the US with my J-1 visa (without HRR, but I'm getting advisory opinion just in case).
My husband and I emailed to an attoney (we can't afford an attorney, but he is someone we know and is kind enough to give us quick email correspondences), and he recommended to start it over. So we decided to do so, but we just wanted to do it right this time.
We have several questions for gurus:
(1) What is the best way to cancel my GC appliaction? A letter to National Customer Serivce Center? InfoPass? Call to their 800 number (800-375-5283)?
(2) Do I need to explain in details about what happened when I cancel the application?
(3) Can we send a new application now? After sending the cencellation letter? After we receive some kind of confirmation letter of cancelling from USCIC?
(4) Does this jeopardize my J-1 visa status anyway? (I'll ask this question in J-1 visa forum as well).
I'd appreciate any suggestions or comments. Thanks in advance.
