Will US citizens need a passport to enter Canada?
Q: Will US citizens need a passport to enter Canada?
A: Yes, but that won't be fully implemented till 2008. Currently US citizens do need proof of citizenship e.g. US birth certificate or a Naturalization Certificate with a valid picture ID that matches the name on the certificate. Voter Registration and Driver Licenses are NOT proofs of citizenship.
I don't know the answer the the first question as to how long a US citizen can stay in Canada

Not exactly.
Currently, there is no proposal to require Americans to need a passport to get into Canada. They will need one *to get back into the US* from Canada. There is a difference. The USCIS does not tell Canada what documents are needed to enter that country.
BTW, the proposal everybody hears about requiring US Citizens to require a passport does not have the support of President Bush.

When The US Department of Homeland Security announced that Canadians would need a passport, Canada's Interior/Public safterty minister Ann McLellan inomed that Canada will retaliate with similar rules for US Citizens.

The Canadian Question
We were asked proof of citizenship while entering Canada (Windsor) two weeks ago... If there is a difference between the stated law and the enforced one, you as the one trying to cross the border will have a hard time arguing that in your favor.
It may well be that there is difference between acceptable documents to enter Canada and those to return to the US...
Certainly better to also have documents to able to return to the US (if intending to return)
