Can a Canadian permanent resident(PR) apply for GC?

Can he/she retain both PR at a time? Any restrictions on Canada or US side?

Thanks in advance

yes, a canadian PR can apply for US GC.

No, Either one has to give up. You cannot maintain both the GC's at a same time.

Thanks in advance

Thanks Sam99!

Let assume if a person has Canadian PR and is in process of GC, at what point he will be asked to choose one?

If in mean time the person get Canadian citizenship then?

Thanks Again

In order to maintain Canadian PR you need to be physically present in Canada for 2 years in every 5 years period.

So you can stay out of Canada for 3 years without losing Canadian PR.

Meaning you can keep both US and Canadian PR at the same time for some years.

I have Canadian PR and am currently waiting for 485 approval.

Nobody will ask you to chose one at any time.
But if you can't fulfil the requirement on any side (e.g. 2 yrs in 5 yrs for canada), you will lose PR for that country automatically.

You will never be asked to choose one over the other unless

1. Considering you do not have a Cdn cit spouse and have stayed away from Canada for more than 2 yrs - you MAY be at the mercy of the CIC when you try to enter - irrespective of whether you have US GC or not. But for sure you'll need the Cdn PR card NOW to enter if arriving by commercial vehicle.

You surely stand to lose one if you try to USE the CdPR to enter the US or viceversa.

2. Acquiring Cdn citizenship nullifies all the above. You are never in danger of losing it unless you renounce it volunteerily.

Hope this helps.

You definitely can have two Gcs. As long as you maintain the residency requirements of each- some duration of stay per year or 3 years- that is easily manageable. I know atleast one person who maintains both.

I got my US GC recently and I came to know today that my canadian GC has also been approved. Can I go ahead with getting canadian GC as well ? Would it affect my US GC when I would be coming back from Canada after landing there for GC ?

Any reply would be highly appreciated.
