Canada-US

Hello, I work in WA, US on a L1B visa as a consultant (Client is a US company and my L1B sponsoring company is Indian). I have a Canadian permanent resident status but I have not lived long enough in Canada so far. I have my Canadian SIN and PR cards. I do not have any bank account/health card/family etc in Canada.

I want to live in Canada to satisfy the 3 years physical stay to be eligible to apply for Canadian citizenship and work in US (as I am unable to find a suitable job in Canada). Which is why I plan to move to a border town in Canada, work from home, and communte once a week to work in US.

Please let me know given my case
1. Am I overlooking any immigration/legal issues?
2. What are the taxes I would have to pay
- In Canada as a PR who lives in Canada and works in US.
- In US
3. What is the Canadian town nearest to Everett in WA

Your inputs would be of great help. Many thanks in advance

-- Many people do that. I do not see any violation of law here.

-- You pay cdn tax since you live in Canada
--- You will pay the US taxes since u will work in the USA. But you can claim foreign tax credit on ur cdn taxes for the US taxes u pay.

Do not know

Thanks a lot for your replies bigboy, texancanadian, bhand. I have one more question. My US visa, I94 and petition expires Feb 07. I will get my petition extended and have a new I94 but may not be able to get the visa stamped. Would this create any problem at the port of entry to US when I travel once/twice a week.

Question about boston area

Is it possible to stay in somewhere in Quebec ( across from Derby Line, Vermont ) and work in Boston, MA ?

Boston seems to be about 3 1/2 hours drive from this area..

Are there any other closer canadian border crossings nearer to Boston other than Derby line ?

Also, if we apply through the federal program, does a stay in quebec satisfy the canadian residency obligations ?

Is French language a requirement to stay in the quebec region ..

-- As long as you stay in North America, you do not need to get a US visa stamped. Just an I-94 for the extension would be fine for crossing borders.

Not sure, but looks like your best bet is in Quebec.

Yes it does satisfy language reqts.

It sure helps but you dont need it, especially if not working there.
