Canada: Study permit & temporary residence visa

Hello,

my friend is Russian and resides in Toronto Canada. She has been there for approximatly one year. She originall had a 1 year multi entry turist visa. The visa expired on July1, however, on her last entry in June she asked the imigration officer at port of entry to extend the visa. He wrote in her passport a 30 day extention. The officer stated this only extends her stay in Canada and she can not leave and return in this last 30 days, (July- Aug).

In June she applied for a Study visa using the "Application to Change Conditions or Extend Your Stay in Canada" form. On the form, she only selected to apply for the Study permit. She did not select the Temporary residence visa option.

My question is: Since she only selected the Study permit option, will immigration only issue the Study permit, or will they issue a Study permit and a Temporary residency visa? I understand if you apply from outside Canada for a Study permit, immigration will automatically issue the Temporary Residency visa if you are from Russia.

My concern is, the current tourist visa is going to expire on Aug 1 and she only applied for a Study permit without the Temporary Residency visa. I'm hoping immigration will notice, (from the copy of the passport pages), the current tourist visa is expiring in Aug and they will automatically issue a new visa as a Temporary Residency visa.

Does anyone understand how this work? We seem to get different answers from the different officials we talk with.

Thanks in advanced for your help

The immigration office told me the Study permit will allow her to stay in Canada and go to school. However, she will not be able to re-enter Canada if she leaves to visit Russia. I was told a temporary residency visa is required for re-entry.

In order to get a temporary residency visa, she will have to mail it to the Canadian embassy requesting the visa. Does anyone know if she will be required to have an interview or take another medical test and how long this can take?

Thanks
