Can you work with a J2/F2 vis?

My husband and I are both Canadian citizens and he has been offered a job to work in the U.S. at a university starting October 1, 2005 which will
go towards his PhD which begins in September 2006.

As he is working for a year at the lab, his boss has told him that he will
be eligible for a J1 visa and will then switch to a F1 visa when he begins
his PhD next September. I have a few questions I hope someone can help me
answer:

1. As his spouse, I assume I will be eligible for the F2 visa - if so, will I be able to take up employment in the United States?

2. When my husband has a J1 visa, will I be able to work with a J2 visa?

I've done a fair of research but the sites are telling me different things and it's very confusing. I've been to the US Consulate website, the Immigration website so I hope someone can help me.

Many thanks!

F2 J2 work permit...

hi,

from what the international student advisor at my univ told us as of aug 16, 2005, F2 visa holders cannot work, but J2 visa holders are eligible to apply for work permits.
