Can wife travel separately to US after GC approval?

Hello,

I just got my GC approved by the US Consulate, Chennai. :) The interview was pretty gruesome but the officer finally gave the green signal! He definitely acted quite pricey!

Basically, the consular officer grilled me about why I want to become a PR and what I told the consular officer when I wanted to go to the US for my higher studies 5 years back. He also was not happy about my tax transcripts from the IRS and asked for the 1040s instead! He wasn't too happy with the many marriage photos that I showed him- he asked to see the whole photo album!!! I don't know if he was in a bad mood, but yes, he was pretty darn rude!

(1) My wife and I have our tickets booked for this Friday but she wants to stay back in India for a couple more weeks. Can you tell me if my wife can come separately to the US or do we need to go together to the port of entry???

(2) Also, there is a rumor about getting themeningitis vaccination done before arriving in the US. Is this true???

Your reply will be much appreciated. :)

Thanks,

Hi,

The officer must be having a bad day or something must have ticked him off, anyway you finally got the Visa.

Your wife's IV should say on top something like "The person can travel with the spouse/parent or follow them into the US". Basically, she can either travel with you or after you but not before you. You both have up to 6 months to enter the US after the IV grant.

Congrats on the GC!!

Form-1040 versus IRS Tax Transcript

Hi Anushri,

the form-1040 is the hard copy of the tax return that YOU filled out and sent to IRS. If you have e-filed, you still get to print out your copy of form-1040. It is this copy of the tax return that YOU filed, that is being referred to as Form-1040 in the above post.

IRS tax transcripts are, on the other hand, printouts from IRS system, showing line items from your tax return, tax paid, refund, etc. So, think of it as a summary information extracted from your tax return. This is different from form-1040, but in summary reflects the information YOU provided in your form-1040.

And yes, you order IRS tax-transcripts through the automated voice response system by calling IRS at 1-800-829-1040.

You need to carry both, copies of your Form-1040, as well as tax transcripts from IRS, both for last 3 years.

And in addition to Form-1040 copies, and IRS tax transcripts, you have to take your original W2 forms as well (plus copies).

My friend was asked for W2 at Mumbai Consulate. But I think it may not be an absolute necessity. But its better to carry it, if one has it.

That's what I'm pointing, it is not reqd. but recommended from experience. I took anything and everything remotely related to immigration and job (e.g., I had my F1 I20s ...)

Question regarding wife FOLLOWING at a later date.

Folks,

I am trying to see if I my wife can come seperately after we get our Immigrant visa. I guess one can but my question is do I have to indicate this NOW on the DS230 part I form which will be sent to NVC as part of packet3.

I see that there are two Qs on DS 230 part I:

21a. which asks who is going to accompany the applicant NOW?

21b. whic asks who is going to FOLLOW the applicant at a later date?

1). Can one change this info at the time of interview??

2). Is there any problem with wife coming back at a LATER Date with respect to POE formalities??

Please share experiences. It would be very helpful in making my decision.

Thanks
S

Not reqd. You can verbally suggest to have different packets. If it is Mumbai, you will get seperate packets anyway.

Nope! Only requirement is that dependent cannot come earlier.

Wife coming to US later

Regarding wife coming to US at a later date, I have a question:

Is it necessary for me to submit a DUPLICATE ORIGINAL Employment letter for my wife (rather than a photocopy of my employment letter), if my wife is entering US at a later date?

I read some post where a guy suggested to submit a Duplicate Original Employment Letter if the wife is coming back at a later date.

Employment letter has nothing to do with travelling at a later date. If you two are planning to attend inteviews on a different dates then you may require to have a copy of the original Employment letter not necessarily Duplicate copy.

VM,
I suppose that means, even if my wife enters US on a different date, we DO NOT have to submit a duplicate original? A photocopy is good enough?

Sansin,
I believe you and your wife are planning to attend the interview togeather, so the officer will ask for only the original Emp. letter no photocopy. After the interview and approving your application a separate packet with the Immigration visa stapled on the top of the packet will be given on each individual name which is more than enough for that individual to carry for POE.

Thanks
