Hi all
Greetings.

We got GC recently and updated immigration status with SSN office and I got new cards.

I have 5yr. old(already have TIN) and I wanted to know if kids need to apply for SSN or don't they require at all till age of 16 or what ever? B'cause, when I tried to call public school for enrollment, they asked to get one if kid have.

Or kid can get their own SSN by applying? What are advantages to have or not to have, if any?

Advantages:

You need your child's SSN to put him/her down as a dependent
on 1040 to reduce taxes. You can of course apply to IRS
for a temporary tax ID but why not just go for SSN?

Many other organization use SSN as ID, your child's school,
peditrician, etc

You can open some education saving account like 529
for kids. SSN may be needed too

If you put down yoru child as beneficiary as your
401K, your life insurance etc, you need to put down
his SSN too (not necessary but may save a lot of
paper work later).

Most children born here apply for SSN rightway
in hospitals.
