Can the spouse work with EAD without SSN? and show SSN once he/she has received it.

If the employer is ok with it, then you should be fine, else they will insist on SSN before putting you
on job or during paper work. It is better to get SSN first to work on EAD.

Its easy to get SSN. Ask your wife go to Social security office, and show her EAD they will issue SSN for her.

It might take a couple of days to receive the card but you can ask them to give you the number. (My wife went there days later and got the number)
 
waiting for 5 weeks to get SSN!!!

My experience is most employers insist on SSN in addition to EAD. Some may be ok. however, getting an SSN has been a long process. they told to wait for 8-12 weeks for maual verification with INS. My wife is waiting for 5 weeks now. Even today, thy have no number on file, let alone receiving the actual card.(NJ). May be it depends on state/local office. I know of few in CA who got in 3weeks.

My wife applied for SSN with EAD in the first week of December. And we are still waiting to hear anything about her SSN. We\'re planning to go to the local office tomorrow.
 
As for my wife\'s case, it was lost in the mail.

She applied in mid Dec and was told it only took 10 days to get the card. Due to the Christmas high volume mailings (I guess), her SSN was lost in the mail. She went back to the SSN office and reapply. It took her 1 week to receive the card. SSN number is still the same.
