Hi,
I am applying for my citizenshipship next week sometime after May 15. I am changing my name in the naturalization process. I am wondering if my name change can delay my naturalization. I read in the Guide to Naturalization that for name change there has to be a court in my area that arrange oath ceramonies, it also mention that at the time of interview the interviewer will ask to fill out a petition and that it can delay the oath. any advise will be appreciated

No Worries

Syed,

Do not worry anything about name change. When you have your interview they will ask if you want your name changed. There you can mention what you want the new name to be. Then during your oath ceremony along with the oath you will sign a court document that officially changes your name.

No issues at all. It doesnt delay any procesing.

My wife had her name changed and it was a breeze

I think it depends on the district office

I think that to legally change your name your oath needs to be conducted by a judge.
If the particular office you're filing in doesn't have such judicial oath cermonies it could delay the process since you'll need to wait until there is one (potentially a couple of months).
The best thing to do is to ask during the interview how much if any delay this could cause.

I would like to share my experience. Although I dont have a name change but the dob on my gc is incorrect. So I visited the local INS with the issue (& also to find out my status of citizenship process).

I was told that I would have to get my GC corrected and pay for the fees.
For correct info I need to have a proof (birth certificate, which I dont), or other proofs (affidavit, certificates, etc.) When I asked if this will delay the processing, they said no it will not. but I need to get it fixed asap.

So I too conclude that it would not delay the process, but you may want to check in with the local INS office.

A question for people who were born in India & dont have official birth certificate... What is the alternative... In my case, I was not born in a hospital so have no hosiptal records or other registration information. The INS officer said that DOB on Passport is not sufficient.

Any ideas for providing proof of dob in the absence of birth certficate. Thanks

What kind of documentation did you use at the time of green card? when I had got my green card, I submitted a letter from the local municipality's Office of Registrar of Births, that there was no record of my birth. In addition, I had submitted two notorized affidavits from my parents declaring my DOB and place of birth in a format provided by the attorney. This is what my attorney had asked for when I was going thru' the green card process. When time came to apply for n-400, I just submitted the copies of the same affidavits and the letter from the local municipality's Office of Registrar of Births, that there was no record of my birth. I finished my citizenship with no DOB related questions or issues.

Thanks for sharing your information.

Actually I prepared the same affidavits in India while I was preparing my GC. For some reason, I never had to provide those documents. And now I cant even find those papers...

Anyway, I found out that the indian consulates do issue you birth certificate based on your passport. So I am going to request them.

Thanks
