Please advise:

I just sent the application for my first EAD...

Now can I show up at the driver's license office with (whenever I recieve it, of course) just the receipt notice itself, and hope they accept that document for the DL renewal? (don't wanna wait for the 30-60-90 day period of the final EAD approval before I go for the renewal...DL has already expired and I am desperate to renew it!)

Or you think/know it is the physical appoval notice and/or the EAD Card itself that they consider as the accepted document???...

Any ideas?

An increasing number of states are getting very strict about issuing DLs to non-citizens, esp. those without PR. In some cases, foreign applicants are required to visit two offices, one for receiving the permission to apply for DL (where applicants are required to bring EAD or any other documents like I-20 for students), utility bills, valid passport, SS card) and the other for applying for DL. I don't know if your state is following the national trend fast, but as _Call me Shrek_ says, it wouldn't hurt to give it a try!

Also, what about renewing your DL using your current status (e.g. H1b/I-94)? You are not out of status, are you?

First rule: never volunteer any info not specifically asked for. :-P

Texas was (is?) very easy. I brought in my about to expire license from another state, and they issued me one for 8 years or so, no questions asked (2002). Mississippi - same story (couple of months back). Can't you do it by mail in your state?
