Hi,

I am all set to file for LPR. I was under the impression that passport would be enough to show place of birth, if birth certificate could not be produced from home country. But now just to be sure, does anyone know for sure if passport can replce birth certificate or they would only consider birth certificate or for that matter if photocopy of birth certificate ( as in FAXed copy) would also work.

Thanks,

Copy of birth certificate should be fine. USCIS does not ask for original.
Passport would not be accepted as proof of birth.

Hello guru,

I submitted the photocopy of the birth certificate, which was faxed to me by my parents in India.

Ari4u, I dont have the original birth certificate, since you are required to submit it when you join the school for the first time. My question is, dont they require you to have originals of all the photocopies you submitted to them when you go for the interview?

Remember if the birth certificate is in another language than English you have to translate it (some people forget that part) :)

Good luck,

You should have all the originals of your documents during the process (in case that the USCIS ask for them), your parents can send you the original by first class mail or you can ask your embassy if they can issue you a birth certificate here in the US.

Good luck,

Sometimes the officer asks to see originals for verification and sometimes they dont care. Its always a good idea to carry originals to the interview.

Also, if your school currently has your birth certificate with them, they can issue a notarized birth statement also mentioning that they are retaining the original for their records. Schools usually have notary officers who can do this for you. You can check it with them

Additionally, (This is what my notary officer told me) you can collect all original documents of proof of your birth and show it to the notary officer who would issue a notarized birth statement confirming your date of birth with other evidences presented.

Or.. ask your school if you could borrow your original for the interview.

Hope this helps. Good Luck!

they never asked for it !!

Good! as Ari4u told you, they can or not ask for the originals, it's up to the officer to do so. It's good to have all the documents with you in any case.

Good to know that the interview went smoothly.

Well If you are from India, you get as many as copies from the Local body(municipal corporation), if your birth is registered & you know the registratin date.

If you are a US citizen, the passport will not serve as proof of your birth. You need an original birth certificate or a certified copy of your birth certificate. And if you don't have one, you can visit the vital records office in the state you were born. You can apply for it there.
